Before 1913: Looking southeast toward the front of what was then the high school and grade school, located at 108 Sanborn Street. In 1903, when the brick school on the hill at the south end of Canada Street became overcrowded and this wood frame structure was erected at a cost of about $12,000. It was constructed entirely of clear, white pine with hard maple woodwork and was a bit of a torch, but the students were well drilled in the evacuation procedures and the building could be emptied in an orderly fashion in 45 seconds. It began service in 1903 with four rooms for eight grades on the lower floor and in 1904 four rooms for the four years of high school on the second floor. A lot of kids went through those doors in 64 years. Its final demise came when most of the rural schools were closing or consolidating and students were being sent into town. The people in the district fought tooth and nail to defeat the school board's attempt to consolidate the entire district with
