- Description
By the middle of the 18th century, tension was building between England and France over control of the interior of North America. The British claimed territory for the colony of Virginia extending to the Mississippi. In response, the French established a number of forts, as shown on this map, in an attempt to prevent British advances into the disputed area. Hostilities began in 1755 and continued until 1763 when France ceded its claims in North America to England.
