The fashion of the day was long skirts, narrow waists and wide brimmed hats for the ladies when this picture was taken in about 1909. Even then, 5th and Wisconsin was a wind swept corner, where coattails blew and men chased hats down the street. Names such as Barret, Gattman, Fay Lewis and Cream City Business College, which are now lost in the city's memory, were common terms in the days when these names signified the growth of the city's popular downtown shopping area. Ice cream parlors with wide awnings fit right in with the tobacco dealers and fine tailors on Milwaukee's main street at the turn of the century. These were days of the city's transition. A police call box gave the brick street an aura of metropolitanism, while a hitching post put it right back in the horse and buggy age.
