Beginning in the 1880s the State and University of Wisconsin began to promote farmer education and scientific dairying. The Wisconsin Dairy and Food Commission, which inspected dairy plants and dairy products, was the first in the nation. This 1918 map shows the tremendous growth of the dairy industry in Wisconsin.
