- Description
One man stands and two men sit in front of Dhooge's Factory, a two story building that includes the words "Dhooge's Fancy Creamery Butter Factory" painted in large white letters on the front. A white circular image with a dairy cow in the center is placed below the peak of the roof on the front of the building. There is a wooden sidewalk parallel to the front of the building, and a wooden staircase up to the second level that extends along the right side of the building.
Dhooge's Creamery was the first business of its kind established in northern Ashland County, in 1902. Founded by Frank S. Dhooge, who was a merchant in Ashland and owned a 240 acre farm. The creamery kept 50 thoroughbred short horn milk cows. The other officers of the company included O. M. Wold, secretary and treasurer, and Leonard Markingson, the butter maker. Markinson graduated from Wisconsin University in butter making.
