Democrat
Born June 30, 1856, in Darlington, Wisconsin. Twice elected mayor of Darlington. Came to Milwaukee in 1886. Lawyer. Democrat. Elected mayor in 1898, 1900, 1902, 1904 and 1908. A master showman and politician. Milwaukee's best publicity agent. Ran a wide open town in spite of increasing protests from press and pulpit. Loved parades and all public appearances. His long period of political domination paved the way for the first socialist administration. In 1924 he tried to make a political comeback and almost defeated Mayor Hoan. Lived in San Francisco for several years. Died in Milwaukee, August 8, 1932, at the age of 76.
