The construction of the Soo Line ore dock in Ashland, Wisconsin took place during 1916 and 1917. This dock was designed by Toltz Engineering Company of St. Paul, Minnesota (today TKDA) and built by General Contractors: Foley Brothers and Peppard and Fulton of St. Paul. The Soo Line ore dock was built of concrete and steel, at 900 feet in length with 150 pockets. It had a capacity of 52,500 tons and the timber trestle approach was 1,000 feet long. The dock was 65 feet 8 inches wide at the water line and 59 feet wide with 4 railroad tracks at the top. There were 6,800 piles driven to support this dock and it was 80 feet high above the waterline. The trains backed the ore cars onto the dock, and the hoppers on the bottom of the cars opened, dumping the ore into the dock pockets. The 34 feet long steel chutes were operated with electric motors and could be raised or lowered in 32 seconds.
