- Description
People who pass this corner in rush hour traffic may not believe it, but this really was the corner of N. 2nd and N. Plankinton (or W. Water as it was known) in the 1890's. Hitching posts lined the sidewalks instead of parking meters, and there was no need for "No Parking" signs. Tall telephone poles stood along the streets with other poles that carried lines for the city's electric streetcars, an innovation of 1890. The cobblestones echoed with the hoof beats of horses pulling wagons and carriages to the many businesses in the area - the Minn Billiard Co., 217 2nd (which was destroyed by fire on Mar. 17, 1911); Fleischmann & Co., 213 2nd, manufacturers of compressed yeast; the Wittig Plumbing Co., 219 2nd; the Triangle, featuring Cream City beer and many others.
