- Description
Large, three story building with wrap around porch on first level, and a second level balcony extending along the left side of the building. This wooden building was the original Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland, WI. A dirt road runs parallel to the hotel, with wooden sidewalks along the right and left side of the building.
This hotel was built by the Wisconsin Central Railroad. Its out of town guests would arrive at the Union Depot and the hotel was a short walk away. It became a favorite vacation spot for people from larger cities. The building stood about where the Ashland County Courthouse is now located at 201 West Main Street. After it was damaged by fire, the hotel became a workingman's lodging house. Most of the hotel was demolished in 1914, but a portion of the building was moved to the corner of Second Street (today Main Street) and Seventh Ave. West and renamed The Culver, and later The Menard Hotel. The building was destroyed in 1957 by a fire.
