- Description
View of the front and right side facades of the Lake Superior District Power Company office building located at 101 West 2nd Street (now Main Street). This three story brick building was originally the First National Bank in Ashland, WI. Down the road are signs for Northernair Café located at 105-107 West 2nd Street, the Ashland Daily Press, and Snow-Wyte Bakery.
The First National Bank at 101 Main Street West was organized in 1886. Dr. Edwin Ellis served as president while the vice president was Samuel S. Fifield. Madison architects Conover and Porter designed the bank building, which largely survives in good condition, although the first level of the Second Avenue West façade was “modernized” in 1938. Lake Superior brownstone was used for foundations and architectural trim on Ashland buildings that exhibit the Richardsonian Romanesque style including the First National Bank building at 101 Main Street West.
