- Description
This folder mostly contains mostly professional correspondence written and received by Increase Allen Lapham in 1864. The correspondence covers a range of Lapham's interests and pursuits including archeology, the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, plants, and conchology. A number of letters detail exchanges of plants and shells between Lapham and his peers. Also included are correspondence with the Office of the U.S. Lake Survey regarding the survey of Lake Michigan, and several diagrams tracking storms. Of note is a letter written by Lapham to his son, Henry Lapham, on August 6th trying to persuade him not to enlist as solider in the Civil War. Lapham argues his son should finish his education before enlisting, stating an educated man is worth more to the government. Lapham was a Quaker, believing in pacifism. The folder also includes two letters written to Lapham's daughter, Julia Alcott Lapham.
