- Description
This Italianate structure was built in 1904 for the use of the Reedsburg Brewery owned by Albert Fuhrman. Max Von Viltier of Viltier Manufacturing drew up the plans. A fire in 1903 had destroyed the previous structure also used as a brewery. The brewing industry in Reedsburg dates back to 1870 with the business owned by Frank and Florin Meckler. The brewery closed during prohibition. It was later owned by Hans B. Johnson, and then P. H. Schweke. At the time of the survey, the building was occupied by Southwest Wisconsin Petroleum, Inc. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Reedsburg Historic Survey was conducted from October 1983 through April 1984 by the City of Reedsburg and community volunteers. The project was funded, in part, by a National Park Service and U. S. Department of the Interior grant, administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The surveys and accompanying photographs, housed at the Reedsburg Public Library, were compiled to determine National Register of Historic Places eligibility.
