- Description
From a booklet of 37 engravings based on a series of photographs taken by H.H. Bennett in 1886 of a group of raftsmen from the Grand Rapids (Wisconsin Rapids) area during their journey down the Wisconsin River. From T. A. Taylor, 100 Years of Pictorial and Descriptive History of Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin (1934-1940): "Cook Mike Lane and cookie Ashley Bennett., On these rafts were built the cook's shanty and the "dog-houses" as sleeping cabins for the men." From A.L. Arpin, Mississippi basin pioneer (1962): "Cook, Mike Lane, and helper, the Cookie, washing up after dinner. "Cookie" was Ashley Bennett, son of photographer Bennett, who volunteered his services during the float."
