This map was made and signed by Jane Renwick. It was likely made by her at the age of 12 along with another map with a known date, made and signed by her. This is a typical example of a map copying exercise that was commonly part of a young woman's education in the early nineteenth century. On April 26, 1826, Jane married Charles Wilkes, who later gained fame as the commander of the United States Exploring Expedition.
