- Description
The lumberyard started out as sheds and stables built for the Hutchison Lumber Company. James Hutchison (sometimes spelled Hutchinson) was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to Mineral Point in 1840 at the age of 21. He mined here for six years, then went to the Lake Superior area when copper was discovered; there he lost his right arm and right eye in a mining accident. Returning to Mineral Point, he taught himself to write with his left hand and ran for Clerk of Circuit Court. After several years as clerk, as well as farmer and grain dealer, he started in the lumber traded in 1864. He was elected Mayor of Mineral Point in 1869 and in 1875.
