- Description
Yunnan Province, China 1943 - 1945
Lumber for construction projects was all produced with primitive tools. Logs were first marked with a snap line. The line was immersed in a thick ink like mixture in a buffalo horn container. The line was on a spool and drawn through the ink and then through an end hole in the horn. The logs were then hewn square as shown above. These were then cut with hand saws and to the desired thicknesses. The boards were then stacked for air drying prior to use. The carpentry was excellent and the craftsmen took much pride in their work. Floors, desks, closets, beds, dressers, chair, tables, window frames, doors and many other items were produced by these skilled craftsmen.
