- Description
The way to victory (called by Germania on Card 49) according to General von Schlieffen, was through neutral Belgium. On August 4th Germany's Imperial Chancellor, Theobold von Bethmann-Hollweg, surprised both left and right within his government by his admission that "Our invasion of Belgium is contrary to international law, but we will make good the wrong we are committing as soon as our military goal has been reached!"
Card 50 shows Kaiser Wilhelm's helmet held in the talons of a German eagle high above Belgium, which appears on a map within a border of its national colors. The inscription reads "I will place my helmet firmly on this terrain [Gelande]."
