Published under the auspices of the Advancement Association of Appleton, 1892, this volume is primarily a collection of original photographs by the commercial photographer J. E. H. Stimson, of Appleton. It includes all of the major structures of the time; schools, both municipal and Lawrence University, churches, manufacturing facilities and businesses. Also represented are a large number of private homes belonging to prominent residents, and photos of the leaders of the city, and local political scene. Finally, as you would expect from the Advancement Association of Appleton, there is a snapshot of the area extolling the virtues of its physical location and attributes, vigorous manufacturing productivity, modern progressive views and excellent educational opportunities. This provides a wealth of information about exactly what it was like to be living, or making a living, in Appleton in the late 19th century.
