This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, J.E. Jones. The Italianate style dwelling on West Pleasant Street, also known as the E.W. Farrington House, was built in 1881. The Italianate details include the low-pitched pyramidal roof, wide frieze board, broad eaves and bracketing, front veranda with chamfered posts, narrow and tall windows with arches and hood moldings, and the cast iron work on the roof. According to an article in the Tales of Old Portage collection, J.E. Jones went from a country school teacher to an incredibly prominent member of the Portage community. He is best known for his editing and publishing work at the Portage Democrat news publication, where he worked for 38 years. He is also remembered as a multi-term mayor, member of the Swan Lake Yacht Club, vice president of the Chicago and Wisconsin Valley Street Railway Company, and officer of the
