- Description
This photo was taken on January 15, 1935 by the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Milwaukee Fire Department, preliminary to demolition, starting on January 18, 1935. It shows the Espenhain department store building at 400-416 W Wisconsin Ave (the old "Library Block") shortly before J. C. Penney built its store at the site in 1935. Just before this, a woman's clothing store called Roxie's occupied the building for a few years until 1933; in 1934 the City Directory listed the address as vacant. The empty, trash-strewn storefront windows of the defunct Roxie's, along with remnants of going-out-of-business signs, can be seen. A Milwaukee Plate and Window Glass Co. truck is parked alongside, perhaps foreshadowing the end of this old Milwaukee landmark building.
