The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 defined how new states and territories were to be created out of the wilderness Great Lakes region. Over the next 50 years, as its population grew, Wisconsin passed under the jurisdiction of several new territories. This lovely hand-colored map shows states and territories from the Ohio Valley to Lake Superior, and west to Missouri and Minnesota, about the year 1830, when most of Wisconsin was still part of Michigan Territory.
