- Description
A very old photo of the Bank of Commerce on E. Water St. and Wisconsin. Horse-drawn carriages can be seen on the road. The Ludington Building (built 1851) in the early 1870s, at the corner of E. Wisconsin Ave. (then Wisconsin St.) and N. Water St. (then E. Water St.) This corner became, in 1892, the site of the Pabst Building, which was demolished in 1981. The 100 East Wisconsin Building currently occupies this site. The 1867 wooden swing bridge, with its curved arch, is visible at center, above which looms the future site of Gimbel's across the Milwaukee River.
Old Ludington Bldg NW corner of E. Water [now N. Water] and Wisconsin 1851; Luding. Block cor. Wis. and E. Water Streets. Early 1870's. [Transcript is from handwritten notes on the back of two different copies of the photograph.]
