Marquette Tribune article reporting on plans to tear down the John Plankinton Mansion, which housed the College of Speech, September 18, 1974.
Wednesday, September 18, 1974 The Marquette Tribune Speech building to be demolished By Joe Herman The Marquette College of Speech building at 625 N. 15th St. is scheduled to be torn down next semester to make room for the expansion of the Dental School. The building's destruction will mark the end of what was once the most elegant and expensive house in the northwest. The building was constructed in 1856 by James Rogers and was valued at $200,000 in the late 1800's. In its heyday, the house boasted such luxuries as a mahogany elevator, stained glass windows, marble floors and gold plated doorknobs. The building's most famous owner was John Plankington, a meat packing millionaire, who purchased it from Rogers in 1864. It was obtained by Marquette in 1918 and has been used for classrooms since that time. The problem of renovating the house into an academic area has been one of the building's drawbacks. "We had to have better facilities for an Instructional Media," said Alfred Sokolnick
