This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Louis F. Schulze. The residence is a side gabled ell with Queen Anne detailing on East Carroll Street was built during the nineteenth century. The residence was not constructed with the intricate layout and detailing of other Queen Anne homes in Portage. Instead, the gabled ell includes details suggesting Queen Anne influence in the windows and porch construction. This is seen in the wrap around function, spindled frieze, geometric railing, and turned columns of the porch. The sash windows and the front picture window with leaded glasswork are additional examples of Victorian influence. Lewis was known in Portage for his service as a firemen and a member of the building committee for the combined city hall and firehouse of 1886.
