This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the home of then-owner, William Holden. It is likely that the residence was originally constructed mid-nineteenth century in the Italianate style; the Victorian decorative ornamentation may have been added to the facade, at a later date. The Italianate details include the general emphasis on verticality, quoins, and window hood moldings. The front porch veranda and its decoration--spindled frieze and turned posts-- indicate reference to Queen Anne architecture. William Holden was born in England in 1829 and immigrated to America in 1849. He relocated from Milwaukee and settled in Portage in 1850. According to the History of Columbia County (1880), Holden enlisted in 1861 to fight in the Civil War, and he served until 1864. Following the war, he worked as a farmer, wagon maker, and cabinet maker. He was married three times. His first wife, Harriet A
