- Description
This is a crazy quilt made by Joyce’s paternal grandmother, Gertrude Miller Munz. It was a gift to Joyce. This quilt is made of wool, Grandma Gertrude took apart old men’s suits, jackets, and vests and used the material to make quilts for her children and grandchildren. Each piece was embroidered with fancy stitches using baby yarn. They all lived on a family farm between Highland and Avoca and grandma would tell the kids all about the stitches she was using as she made the quilts. Joyce got to see her make many of them. Sadly, not all of the grandchildren got quilts because Grandma didn’t live long enough. Joyce’s quilt is made of many patterns and solids of green, red, blue, gray, brown and black wool. Since it is a crazy quilt, there are squares made up of all kinds of irregularly shaped pieces. There are 2 whole vest pieces in the quilt. The buttonholes and the pockets are decorated with yarn. One of the pockets looks like a flower box. Joyce says she doesn’t actively use this q
