- Description
On their return journey in 1673, Joliet and Marquette got only as far as Green Bay when winter set in. In the spring of 1674 Marquette stayed in the upper country while Joliet headed for Montreal. Shooting the Lachine rapids just outside the city, his canoe overturned, he nearly drowned, and all his records of the trip were lost. A few weeks later, in August 1674, the author of that year's Jesuit Relation, Claude Dablon, interviewed Joliet about where he'd gone and what he'd seen. Four contemporary manuscript copies of Dablon's notes on that conversation have survived. We give one of those here (previously unpublished) from a photostat obtained by Reuben Gold Thwaites about 1899 from a monastery in Paris; included with it is a typed French transcription and an English translation. Another version is printed in the Jesuit Relations vol 58 (CXXXI: 92-108). Also included here is a letter Joliet wrote on 10 October 1647 to Bishop Francois Xavier de Laval (1623-1708), summarizing the voyage
