- Description
Yunnan Province, China 1943 - 1945
The gateway to Kunming stood proudly in the afternoon sun. It is shown from the inside of the city. Its roof of grey tile and gold leaf trim was in fairly good shape. The base was made of stone and the arched openings accommodated many people. In the right foreground a Chinese gentleman smoked a pipe. Coming toward you is a woman with two grain sacks slung over her shoulder. Two rubber tired carts are pulled by horses. They are stacked high with pillow cases filled with laundry. Shops and vending stalls line the sides of the street. This gateway was known to most every American serviceman who visited Kunming.
