- Description
This unusual tramp-art style baptismal font, used to hold a basin of water for the ceremony of baptism, is lavishly decorated with chip carving and inlay. The eight-sided upper portion, pillar and base are all ornamented with thin pieces of white holly and black walnut with notched edges, built up in layers to form diamond and chevron shapes. The octagonal base is inlaid with a winding leafy vine and a chain of S-curves. An inlaid vine also surrounds the upper portion, which is hinged and opens to reveal a velvet-lined receptacle that would have held a basin.
