- Description
It's unlikely any readers alive today will remember Old St. Mary's Church when it was new, for the church was started in 1846 - but this is too rare a photo to miss. Taken in 1868, it shows the new tower facade and rear sanctuary addition to the Roman Catholic church - an addition which was constructed in 1867. At the time, although the clock faces were in place, they had no hands - clockworks were not installed until 1870. According to one Milwaukee history, "the detail at the entrances, the cornice, and the tower itself reflect the Victorian taste of the times and while quite interesting, served to obscure the more pristine lines of the original Zopfstil (a type of architecture)." The architect for the church, Victor Schulte, also designed St. John's Cathedral and Holy Trinity Church. Schulte was born in Germany and brought up in Pennsylvania. His name appears in the earliest Milwaukee city directories as a carpenter and builder. He was not listed as an architect until 1857.
