- Description
This photograph shows Piotrowski's Furniture on North Plankinton Ave. It is one of many brick buildings that line the street. There are several cars parked in front of the buildings.
Above: Looking south along the present (1959), North Plankinton Avenue, before 1930 know as West Water Street, and in the very early days as just Water Street, and below how it appeared in the early 1850's, and at the time what was known as Cedar street (West Kilbourn Avenue) did not continue through, nor was there a bridge across the river at that point or location. The picture above shows the east side of the street, and according to J. S. B. from the time of its beginning up to 1838, from Spring street to Third Street, (West Wisconsin Avenue to North Third Street) the ground was covered with at least two feet of water, where the sidewalk now is, crotched stakes were driven into the mud, upon which cross pieces were laid, and upon them a plank two feet above the water, for a sidewalk. From Third to Chestnut, (West Juneau Ave) along Third street the ground was soft and difficult to pass over with a team, nothing but a mud hole, around 1838. / B 270
