- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, E.J.S. Wright. The dwelling is an understated Queen Anne structure that was ordered to be built by Mrs. S.S. McDuffie in 1892. She resided in the dwelling until 1896, at which point Edward and Jean Wright purchased it. According to an article in The Daily Register (1992), this residence is considered a Queen Anne construction. The "picturesque" Queen Anne details include the asymmetrical layout, polygonal tower, geometric paneled friezes, beveled glasswork windows, spindled frieze and turned post entryway, and balustraded stairway. Though concealed by trees in this photograph, the residence has ornate stick style detailing found on the front porch and in the two-story gable peak. However, the steeply pitched roof and rectangular cupola may suggest some attention to Gothic attention. Edward Wright was born in England in 1848
