PHOTO DESCRIPTION: A view looking north over Alma, Wisconsin about 1908 showing log rafts moving down the Mississippi River which was quite a common practice until 1915. Note the straight row of pilings and booms in the river in upper left corner. This was used to float logs into a slough on the Minnesota side to avoid paying a Wisconsin tax of 10 cents a log which was collected when logs were bound into rafts
