Yuanji Zhang, known as Xiaozhai (courtesy name) and Jusheng (pseudonym), was born in Zhenjiang, China. Zhang was a Hanlin Academy bachelor and a central figure of Hundred Days’ Reform (a national political movement in 1898). After the reform fails, Zhang dedicated himself to publication business and served as a director and president of Commercial Press. He believed that education and culture can help revitalize the country. During his tenure of the president in Commercial Press, he organized classic documents and edited text books and made Commercial Press became the most influential educational institution in China.
張元濟,字筱齋,號菊生,浙江人。曾為翰林院庶吉士,積極投入維新運動。政變失敗後,張元濟投入出版事業,曾任商務印書館所長及董事長等職務。任職其間整理古籍、參與教科書編定並推廣教育,期望利用教育及文化以振興國業。
