This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Mrs. R.O. Loomis, the widow of Rodney O. Loomis. This dwelling, built mid-nineteenth century is an architectural composite of popular styles in Portage, at the time. It features elements of Queen Anne, Italianate styles, and Gothic Revival styles. Queen Anne elements include the asymmetrical layout and irregular planning, steep roofline with one dominant gable, and geometric decorative railing. There are subtle Italianate details in the general structure of the building. These features include the chamfered posts of the porch, windows with hood moldings, and exposed eave brackets. Finally, the decorative frieze above the front porch has a quatrefoil design, which is indicative of Gothic influence. The owner of the residence at the time of the photograph, Mrs. Rodney O.
