This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, Andrew James Kiefer. This residence located on Prospect Avenue is an example of Queen Anne architectural styling, a popular architectural choice in Portage. The Queen Anne style includes the steeply pitched, hipped roof, asymmetrical layout, beveled glasswork in the windows, fish scale shingling on the gable faade, spindled frieze, and turned porch post, and finial topped turret. Andrew J. Kiefer was the son of Andrew Kiefer, a man who, according to the History of Columbia County (1914), was one of the most influential citizens Columbia county ever had. In Portage, Andrews father served as an alderman, a city treasurer, barber, a member of the old fire department, secretary of the German Cemetery Association, president and secretary of Liederkranz Society, a school commissioner, and supervisor.
