- Description
This classical revival structure was built in 1920 and altered ca. 1927 and ca. 1976. A brick veneer building built in 1877 was torn down to make room for the Reedsburg Bank. The 1920 building was built by George Isenberg and Childs and Smith served as architects. The bank was first organized by Joseph Mackey, David B. Rudd and Eli O. Rurdd in 1867. The bank was incorporated under state laws in 1895. In 1920 the new structure was built and in later years buildings were torn down for its expansion. August Darrenougue and Mrs. Stahnke were the owners of the center and east sections. A number of businesses originally occupied the current bank site. The building is architecturally significant and is a pivotal property in the Main Street Commercial Historic District.
The Reedsburg Historic Survey was conducted from October 1983 through April 1984 by the City of Reedsburg and community volunteers. The project was funded, in part, by a National Park Service and U. S. Department of the Interior grant, administered by the Historic Preservation Division of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. The surveys and accompanying photographs, housed at the Reedsburg Public Library, were compiled to determine National Register of Historic Places eligibility.
