Looking south on Lake Avenue from the intersection of Grant Street. (A) The Page and Landeck building on the northeast corner of Madison Street and Lake Avenue (B) Emde’s Drug store (C) The Hellstrom Hotel (D) The Opera House, destroyed by fire in 1912, on the southwest corner of Lake Avenue and Washington Street. Ben Franklin, the Post Office, Gamble’s Hardware, the Sportsman’s Bar and Augustine Drug Store now occupy that site (E) The Himley building on the Northwest corner of Lake Avenue and Washington Street, presently occupied by Spark’s Grocery store. (F) “Daddy Duff” as he was affectionately called by his fellow townspersons is standing by his mobile popcorn stand. Daddy Duff, imbued with the entrepreneurial spirit, expanded beyond Crandon with concessions strategically located at fairs and other festive occasions throughout the county.
