This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the home of Portage resident Alois Zienert, which was once located on Prospect Avenue. Alois Zienert built this residence mid-nineteenth century. Though the residence is concealed by trees in the photograph, it was constructed in the Italianate style, as evidenced by the low-pitched roof, chamfered posts, square cupola, and tall, narrow double-paned windows with hood moldings. Alois Zienert was born in Austria in 1849. In 1869, he immigrated to America. He traveled to America via steam vessela two week journeyand took a train to Portage. He ended up in Portage because his uncle was living in the growing community, working in the butchering business. Soon after, he left Portage and traveled westward, where he established a mercantile business. In 1894, he returned to Columbia County, where he retired.
