- Description
In the 1980s, disputes over treaty rights in Northern Wisconsin, particularly the Ojibwe practice of walleye spearing, began attracting national attention. Treaties made between the U.S. government and the Ojibwe in 1837 and 1842 had allowed tribal members to continue to hunt and fish on ceded territory, yet the advent of the reservation system led to disputes over whether the tribes still had unfettered access to this land. In 1989, the Wisconsin State Journal published a series of articles examining the people, places, and politics of the treaty rights issue. These are published here with their permission.
