This photograph shows three brick buildings that were located on N Water St. The buildings were razed some time in 1964. At the time this photo was taken, the following businesses were located in the buildings: Nate Schwartz Sales (604 N Water St), Spangenburg Office and School Supplies (608 N Water St), and Atkins & Wahlberg Real Estate and Insurance (612 N Water St).
cc277ppy / Building shown at middle or center (Spangenberg), built in 1852 by Charles Waterman, the builder, for Charles Edward Wunderly, who at the time was a prominent German physician of Milwaukee, and who died Feb. 21, 1859, came to Milwaukee around the year 1844, aquired this site along with a wood frame building in 1845. A disasterous fire Dec. 17, 1851, completely destroyed this wood frame building and damaging others nearby. First to occupy the new building was Seaman & Osborn, a furniture business. The narrow building shown at right was built 1856, owned and occupied by H. Friend & Bros., clothing business. The Wunderly building, of which as far as is known, was the only one in the city which contained a nameplate of the builder, namely as or having the wording on it as: Charles Waterman - Builder, embedded in the brick at front of building between the windows at second floor.
