On Dec. 18, 1876 the Common Council voted to change the name of Spring St. to Grand Ave. There had been some discussion for several weeks prior to the vote, but in the end the ayes won out 18-2, and the once sleepy street from the Milwaukee River west to the city limits at 35th St. became Grand Ave. Still later, it would become Wisconsin Ave. Within the next 50 years, nearly every present-day building on the avenue between the river and Sixth St. was built or renovated, including the Milwaukee landmarks that today are part of the Grand Avenue Mall - Gimbels, the Plankinton Arcade, the Majestic Building, Matthews Brothers (Woolworth's), and the Boston Store. This photograph shows the busy avenue as it appeared about 1912. A few horse-drawn carts and carriages still shared the street with the electric streetcars. On one side stood Gimbels, which had opened in 1887 and was in the process of building the six segments that comprise today's store. Next to Gimbels was John Plankinton's
