Nelia Olivencia is interviewed on April 9, 2013 in Madison, Wisconsin. Olivencia speaks of how her Puerto Rican identity changed over time, and how that impacted her activism while in college. She discusses the push for ethnic studies at San Jose State University, and how that ultimately helped her decide to work in academia providing support to minority students. Olivencia talks about her position of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as director of Latino student programs, and how she used that role to assist students in professional development. Olivencia also talks about her involvement in the Wisconsin Women's Council, the 2011 Gubernatorial regalo election, and involvement in immigration and collective bargaining issues.This video interview was conducted by students who participated in a Chican@ and Latin@ Studies (CLS) course at University of Wisconsin-Madison, taught by Andrea-Teresa "Tess" Arenas, Ph.D..
