- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, E.L. Jaeger. Earnest Jaeger was working as a clerk in the mercantile business when he built this home for his wife, Mary Peabody, which was originally located not far from Fort Winnebago. Soon after, in 1858, the residence was relocated twenty miles away to Oxford, WI. Shortly following, it was again taken apart and relocated back to Portage to its current location on East Cook Street. The residence was constructed as a gabled ell with a centrally placed, small gable. The home was ornamented likely, originally ornamented with Gothic details; Queen Anne ornamentation may have been added at a later date. The Gothic Revival style is seen in the turned porch columns, spindled frieze, decorative shingling, and sunburst panel in the entryway's gable facade. Jaegers six sons were born in the house.
