This pictorial story, though unlabeled, appears to be from a Milwaukee newspaper, possibly the Journal, and the caption's text (center) implies the period is around 1934: "Safety is an engineering as well as an educational problem. This 'before and after' combination shows the 'battle ground', where W Wisconsin av. sweeps into N. Story parkway. Before 1934 two killed and four injured was an average year's toll. Since 'channelization', as shown below, there have been NO injuries and NO deaths." The caption below the traffic signal photo at right says: "Milwaukee pioneered in the control of pedestrian as well as vehicular traffic. Here is one of the 'walk' signals, now being adopted as standard."
