- Description
Aldo Leopold's rifle is a Winchester Model 1894. The serial # is 467103. The rifle was manufactured in 1908, probably in the latter half of that year. Leopold likely bought it new in 1909 when he graduated from Yale and began his career in the US Forest Service in AZ. It is a "trapper" model which has a 16" barrel that is 4" shorter that the popular carbine. The trapper design (lightweight, short barrel, saddle ring) was very popular as a camp rifle and for use in the field. It was designed for constantly carrying it in a saddle scabbard.
