This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, James Gowran. Gowran built this Italianate style dwelling with elaborate Victorian detailing in 1877. The Italianate style details include the wide, overhanging eaves with decorative bracketing, arched windows with brick framing and lintels, and low pitched roof. The asymmetrical porch with a rounded corner, spindled frieze, ornate balustrade, turned porch columns, and fish scale shingling in the central pediment were popular decorative elements that were prominent in Portage Victorian dwellings. According to an article in the collection of Tales of Old Portage (1960), James Gowran was the first individual in Portage to own an automobile, a 2-cylinder Oldsmobile. He was also a businessman and co-owner, with his son E.A. Gowran, of Wintons. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the 195
