Milwaukee is widely known as a beer capital and over the years many breweries - large and small - sprang up in the city. The building at 406 Chestnut St. (later 406 W. Juneau Ave.) at one time housed the J. Simon Meister Brewery, which was built in 1853. The brewery was a small one, with a capacity of 450 barrels a year - produced by just two employes, who accounted for the establishment's entire $50 per month payroll. Meister's primary product was weiss beer, but it also brewed syphon, a mildly alcoholic, heavy brown beer for women and children. According to one history, the architecture of the building reflects the post-federal type, while the series of six small octagonal windows under the cornice and the curvaceous treatment of the end parapets suggests the rising influence of Victorian taste. When this picture was taken, about 1916, the building was at least partially occupied by Fred Kissinger's market and Phillip Gollusch's second hand furniture store. Other stores in the
