- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the home of then-owner, John A. Graham. This residence, likely constructed at the turn of the twentieth century, is considered by the Wisconsin Architecture and History Inventory as a gabled ell. Though, its ornamentation does suggest some attention to the symmetrical and rational influences of Revival architecture, as well as some later and simple Victorian detailing. The fishscale shingling in the entryway pediment, sunburst panels, spindled frieze, and banisters suggest some Victorian influence. However, the structural composition of the residence is far more simplistic than other Portage examples, considered Queen Anne. The owner of the home at the time of the photograph, John A. Graham, is the son of the well-known businessman, John Graham. Graham went into business at the John Graham Drug Company with his father soon after his marriage in 1895
