- Description
This photographic print, taken by a Portage photographer around the turn of the twentieth century, is mounted on matboard and features the residence of then-owner, T.J. Wells. The dwelling is a gabled ell located on Adams Street and is a good example of the vernacular architecture of Portage during the nineteenth century. It has simple frame construction with a projecting wing and minimal detailing. Biographical information about Thomas is limited. According to Tales of Old Portage, one interesting fact regarding Wells was that he was a member of a champion curling team entitled, "The Crusaders." His team won the International Curling Trophy at Winnepeg in 1889. The annotation, located at the bottom left-hand corner of the object, lists the 1952 resident of this dwelling as Robert Wright.
